Buying Pixels – FAQ

1. How will the funds raised from the 1 million pixel collage be used?

The net funds raised from this year’s sales of 1 million pixels will be equally divided between the USA’s National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) and Malaysia’s Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO).

Both nonprofits will use their share of funds to keep their ongoing direct services and programmes alive. NCADV will use part of the funds received to keep their facial reconstruction programme for domestic violence survivors open and thriving, while WAO will use the majority of their share of the funds to keep their battered women’s shelter – one of the very few in Malaysia – afloat.

Both nonprofits have never quite recovered from the financial battering of the 2008 near-meltdown of the global recession. The funds raised from the Pixel Reveal campaign are meant to provide a buffer for them to help them ride out at least the next 3 to 5 years as the global economy slowly recovers.

2. What is the smallest number of pixels I can buy? Why?

The smallest block of pixels available for sale is 5 pixels (US$5.00).

This is because anything less than US$5.00 means that more than 7% of the donation will go towards credit card transaction fees given that we have to pay:

  • Visa and Mastercards issued in the U.S.: 1.99% + US$0.20 transaction fee +  US$0.05 gateway fee per donation processed.
  • American Express (AMEX): 2.89% + US$0.15 transaction fee + US$0.05 gateway fee per donation processed.
  • Credit cards issued outside the U.S.: Fees vary depending on type of card and the country/bank through which the card is issued.

The larger the donation amount, the smaller the transaction fee will be in proportion to the donation amount (translation: more of your donation will go towards NCADV and WAO).

3. What is the largest number of pixels I can buy?

Technically, you can buy as many pixels as you want. However, each transaction is currently limited to a maximum of US$1000 as this is a micro-fundraising campaign where we encourage people from around the world to take part and pay what they can afford.

If you personally wish to donate more than US$1000 towards buying pixels or if you are a company that wishes to buy a large block of pixels in exchange for having your logo and company profile featured on our website, please contact us here.

4. Will 100% of my donation for pixels go to the beneficiaries?

Like any project of this size and scope, there are expenses involved. Fortunately, this will be kept to the minimum because the majority of the products, skills and services needed by the project had been kindly donated by talented professionals and generous organisations.

However, a small percentage of your donation will go towards the credit card transaction fees given that we have to pay:

  • Visa and Mastercards issued in the U.S.: 1.99% + US$0.20 transaction fee +  US$0.05 gateway fee per donation processed.
  • American Express (AMEX): 2.89% + US$0.15 transaction fee + US$0.05 gateway fee per donation processed.
  • Credit cards issued outside the U.S.: Fees vary depending on type of card and the country/bank through which the card is issued.

We also have to pay monthly fees for other online payment processing services and security services to ensure a smooth and secure donation experience for all donors.

11. If I am not a U.S. citizen, will the tax-exempt receipt still be valid in my country?

We cannot guarantee that the tax-exempt receipt is valid in countries outside the U.S. This will be up to your individual country’s policies as to whether you can claim tax exemption for donating to charities not registered in your country.

In this case, if you would still like to donate, our suggestion would be to make a small US$5 or US$10 donation.

The Pixel Project is still a very young organisation and as we mature and accrue more funds for our work, we will definitely be working on becoming a registered charity/nonprofit organisation in countries beyond the U.S.
